Match Report

The U 16s won a very tight game away to a very strong Sligo side on Saturday in glorious sunshine under Queen Maeve's Knocknarea. However, last Saturday, there was no time to take in the scenery.

The game started really well for us with a try from George Hill after 5 mins leaving us 5:0 up in a tense affair. 5 minutes later Sligo scored to equalise with neither side converting these wide angle kicks. On the approach of half time, after we missed two real scoring chances, Joe Agbo scored a trademark try in the corner which Jack Beatty did really well to convert. 12:12 at half time.

Sligo scored a penalty early in the 2nd to lead by 15:12. Galwegians replied on 10 mins with a fine penalty kick from Jack Beatty to level the match.

15 mins after some great positional kicking from our 10, we laid siege with a fine passing move out to George Hill, we broke through with Hill finish just to the right of their posts. Beatty converted to bring us 22:15 ahead. Sligo fought back late in the game to bring the game to a tight finish on 31 mins with an unconverted try. Game over 22:20 to Galwegians.

Overall, we did deserve our victory as on reflection we did miss some scoreable chances - we had a lot of possession in their 22 for long periods of the second half but did not convert a couple of chances. Good pressure from Sligo though to hold out and eventually break us down. A great game to win.

We have a heavy schedule with a league final v Ballinasloe on Friday evening next and a Cup Final now v either Monivea or Corinthians on Sunday April 15th in the Sportsground.
