Goals for the Season

For the year ahead I would love to see the club move forward together and agree on a new home once and for all, and to finally eradicate our debt . We can all then concentrate on promoting rugby, and increasing the club membership both on and off the field and playing rugby at a more competitive level.

Playing Career

I joined Galwegians in 1982 because Seamus McEvoy, a former President, was an uncle and introduced me to the club.

  • Played with the club in 2nd row from 1982 to 1985 winning Connacht Senior Cup in 1983
  • Received an Ireland B cap against Scotland in November 1984.
  • Played with St Mary’s in Dublin from 1985 to 1988 winning Leinster Senior cup in 1987
  • Played with Connacht from 1984 to 1988
  • Retired in 1988 due to Back injury

Playing Highlights

  • Most memorable moment was beating the arch rivals Corinthians in Senior Cup
  • Best player I played against was Donal Lenihan
  • Best player I played with was Paul Dean

Outside rugby I am the Managing Director of O’Leary Insurances Galway Ltd, and am married with 3 children.

Vincent O’Sullivan RIP

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of or club colleague and Past President Vincent (Vinny) O’Sullivan who passed away this morning.

How ironic that this comes so soon after the loss of his good friend and neighbour from Oranmore, Rod O’Driscoll. We are the poorer for their loss.

More details to follow.

Firsts v Corinthians away, Fri Jan 5th 7.45pm

Happy New Year to all Galwegians and may 2018 bring you much joy and happiness.

Our Firsts start back into All-Ireland League action when we travel across town next Friday night (Jan. 5th) to take on our rivals Corinthians in Cloonacauneen.

Note this game will have a slightly later kick-off time of 7.45pm.

This gives us a chance to regain local bragging rights after our 7-7 draw in November at Crowley Park. Beano, Anto and the boys badly need your support in this vital contest.

Please put it in the New year diary!

Galwegians Womens Award Winners 2017

Womens 2nd XV Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year: Edel Murray

This lady made the move from camogie to the oval ball this year and has made a serious impact to the Wegian’s women. Superstar for the seconds and try scorer for the firsts. Expecting big things from her!

Womens 1st XV Players’ Player of the Year: Beth Mallard

World Cup winning player for NZ. She moved to Galway to take up a post as a lecturer in NUIG & joined Galwegians.  She won silverware  with Wegians & had to retire as she had an old recurring knee injury.  She took up a post as coach with George Naoupu & Bundee Aki & managed to win the Irish Cup twice while coaching the team.  She took over as head coach when George left and the team continued to improve under her guidance. She has now decided to step aside as senior coach this season & spend some time coaching the U6s & her daughter Lola. She will be missed, but we wish her well in her new adventure as mini coach.

New Ireland Womens Internationals 2016-17

  • Ciara O’Connor – She was born in Tralee Co. Kerry, where she started her rugby playing days with Tralee RFC. She moved to Galway to take up a managerial post in Elverys Intersport. She joined Galwegians after moving west and has since played for Connacht.  She made her Irish debut this year against Scotland.
  • Nicole Fowley – Originally had a huge interest in soccer, decided to try rugby so she joined Sligo RFC.  She moved to Galway for work commitments & joined Galwegians & has since played for Connacht. She made her debut against England in the Autumn Internationals.  She picked up an injury so it ruled her out of the 6 Nations.  She is now back in contention for the World Cup.

Joe Tighe Award for Womens Player of the Year: Emma Cleary

This year it goes once again for the third time to the same player. She is an Accountant by profession and has been recently been offered an opportunity to take up a post in San Francisco with her company Oracle. A very popular winner once again. She will be sorely missed and hopefully will return in the not to distant future to play with us again.

Clubwoman of the Year: Edel Burke

Born in Whitegate Co. Clare, moved to Galway for work & joined Wegians. Played for years but had to retire through injury.  Wanted to stay involved so became manager & fixtures secretary, the latter she still does.  She also has a very important role as head chef for the women’s team.  She has cooked a hot meal for the teams playing in Wegians for many years.  The team cannot express enough gratitude to her & she has definitely earned this long over due award tonight.
