John Ryan, Past President of our club (1983-84) passed away, after a long illness, on Tuesday the 28th January 2014. May he rest in peace.
John-ah, as he was fondly known, arrived in Galway over fifty years ago to manage Shannon Travel, then, a fairly unique concept in Galway business.
Thanks to John’s energy and enthusiasm, the business thrived and it was not long before he was able to buy out the Galway operation and set up in a business himself.
He became a rugby referee of great distinction and was well known throughout Connacht and beyond. Being a Limerick man, of course, he was expected to know the laws of the game intimately!
With his dear wife, Rita and sons Dermot and Cormac, the business went from strength to strength and John Ryan Travel’s premises in Williamsgate Street was a continual hive of activity.
Sadly, John suffered a very serious illness a number of years ago and it is tragic indeed that he was unable to enjoy his retirement. Our sympathies are extended to his wife, sons and his extended family.
