Match Report
Galwegians retained the Connacht Senior Cup against Corinthians in Corinthian Park on a wet and blustery Saturday afternoon.
The rain was sheeting across the pitch, slightly favouring the home team in the first half, as the game kicked off. The pitch was heavy, but in good condition considering the recent deluges that have hit the west coast.
Wegians started brightly enough with a try from Jason East off a rolling maul, conditions dictating the forward dominated style of play. 15 mins 0-7
However the rain eased and Corinthians found their rhythm and scored in the corner. 20 mins 5-7
The ding-dong nature of the match continued with Wegians stretching their lead with a Tadhg Leader penalty. 25 mins 5-8.
The home side hit straight back with a try 2 minutes later. 27 min 10-8.
They increased their lead with a well worked line move to score their third try of the match. 30 mins 15-8.
Wegians got themselves back into the match with a second penalty from Leader just before half time. 35 mins 15-11. This was the half-time score.
Wegians upped their intensity in the second half and reduced the deficit to a single point with Leader's third penalty. 45 mins 15-14
The sky blues forwards were getting well on top and got their second maulled try of the game, with Anthony Ryan claiming the final touchdown. 50 mins 15-21
A fourth Leader penalty made it a 2 score lead. 53 mins 15 -24.
The visitors contained the inevitable fightback from Corinthians and eventually put the game out of reach when Brian Murphy won the chase to a clever hack back inside from Ronan Moore. 76 mins 15-31.
Wegians ran out winners to win the Connacht Senior Cup for the 32nd time and qualify for the All-Ireland Bateman Cup semi-final.
