Match Report

Galwegians suffered a demoralising heavy defeat at the hands of UCD in Belfield on Saturday, leaving the Blues rooted fourth from bottom of Division 1, while victory put the students into fourth place at the other end of the table.

The students started much the better team and totally dominated the opening quarter, during which they ran in two tries from Richard Croke and Ken Kennedy, one of which was converted by out-half Killian Lett.

However Wegians finally got some momentum going and were back into their game when they scored a try through prop Denis O'Brien which was converted by full-back Brendon Bartley. And shortly before half-time they were on level terms when winger Barry Liddy finished off an attack to leave it 12-12, Bartley being unlucky with the conversion attempt.

Unfortunately it was to prove a false dawn for the Blues, as any thoughts of coming away with anything to show for their efforts were dispelled during a woeful second-half performance. After Lett restored the students' lead with a penalty, a charge-down saw home scrum-half Cillian Willis grab a soft third try and a 20-12 lead. The introduction of Wegians subs, hooker Conor Muldoon and lock Beano McClearn on the hour mark had little impact in proceedings, and soon afterwards the home side bagged a fourth try and bonus point when lock Brian Hall crossed the line. And the rout was completed with two further tries from Michael Fanning and Kevin McLaughlin, with Lett converting both for good measure to make the final score even more depressing reading for Wegians fans.
