Match Report

A hat-trick of tries from winger and Galway native Niall O’Brien saw Clontarf move up to second place in the Division 1 Table after a comfortable win away to a below-par Galwegians at Crowley Park. The home side played with the advantage of a strong first-half breeze but they failed to make use of the elements, with just a brace of Rob O’Beirn penalties to their name. O’Brien finished well for his first try on 20 minutes to give Tarf a 7-6 half-time lead.

The visitors were always in control in the second-half, and two early Daragh O’Shea penalties stretched their lead to seven points. O’Brien then scored his second try on the hour mark after an intercept, before completing his hat-trick when he finished under the posts near full-time. Galwegians’ only consolation was an injury-time try from John Cleary who ran fully 80 metres to score, but it was too little too late for the Blues.
