Match Report

Galwegians captured the Connacht Senior Cup when they defeated Buccaneers in the final at the Sportsground on Saturday, scoring three tries to one in the process.

Buccaneers had a great start when poor Wegians' defence saw them concede a Gareth Halligan try after five minutes which was converted by Alan Gaughan. But a John Cleary try at the start of the second quarter, which was converted by Cormac O’Beirne, saw the sides level at 7-7 at the break.

Galwegians hit the front five minutes after the restart with an excellent pushover try, with no. 8 Martin Webdale claiming the touchdown. Buccs tried to make inroads but could not breach the Wegians defence. With 5 minutes remaining, O’Beirne added a penalty to make it 15-7. And while Buccs still tried to mount a late fightback, Wegians finished in style with out-half O’Beirne finishing a fine break by scrum-half Robbie Shaw to dive over for a last-gasp try, which he converted himself with the final kick of the game.
