Match Report

Galwegians continued their strong defense of their Connacht Senior League title with a comprehensive 34-9 defeat away of Connemara on Sat.

Wegians exploded out of the blocks with slick hands from the backs setting wing Ronan Moore slicing through the home defense. 0-5.

Connemara worked hard to get into the game and were rewarded with a penalty. 3-5.

The home side had their tails up and controlled the ball for the next 10 minutes, but the Blues defense held strong. Wegians eventually lifted the siege and on their next foray into opposition territory outhalf Tadgh Leader stormed his way over the line. 3-12.

From the kick-off Connemara forced a penalty to keep them in the game. 6-12.

Galwegians immediately went back on the attack and a smartly taken quick tap from No.8 Owen Rooney paved the way for Colin Conroy to crash his way through the home defense. 6-19.

Connemara worked their way back into the game, but once again solid defence from Wegians left the home side with only 3 points to take away for all their hard work. 9-19.

The 10 point half time deficit was increased early in the second half when captain Conroy ghosted his way through the Blacks defense after steaming onto a beautifully weighted pass to score. 9-24.

Wegians were in full control of the match at this point and prop Ja Naughton eventually battered his way to his much sought after try, having been held up over the line a number of times earlier in the match. 9-29.

The Sky Blues had one more try left in them as the match concluded. Replacement centre Paul Griffin finished off a flowing move as he tried to dance through the home defense, following some great build up play, before deciding that simple brute force would be enough to finish off the play. 9-36 full-time.
