Match Report
Galwegians racked up a 10 try victory over Sligo in their first competitive match of the season at a sun kissed Crowley Park on Saturday.
Wegians got the show on the road with the first of what would turn out to be a hat-trick of tries for flanker Dave Doherty who stormed over after 5 minutes.
The score spurred the visitors into action and they replied with a couple of penalties leaving the first quarter of the match finely balanced.
However once the Sky Blues ditched their over ambitious off-loading game and starting playing more direct rugby, the scores started to flow.
Scrum half Conor O'Rourke blocked down an attempted clearance and recovered the ball to score his first senior try on his debut.
Rapid fire tries from wing Ronan Moore, centre and captain Colin Conroy and prop Ja Naughton but the game beyond the visitors and left Wegians with a comfortable 33 points to 6 lead at the break.
With the wind at their backs, the home side kicked on in the second half with 2 more tries from Doherty, a scything midfield break and try for centre Garry O'Brien, a silky running break from wing Dave Butler before the final try of the match on full time for Ja Naughton to rack up his second of the match.
A good start to the season for Wegians who will look to continue this good form on their away trip to Connemara next Saturday.
