Match Report
Galwegians look like they are in for a long hard season in Div 2B based on their first outing of the season.
Loughrea played to their obvious strengths, with their big pack totally dominating home side in the set pieces, preventing the Sky Blues getting any sort of decent ball to their electric backline.
A brute of a crosswind played havoc with kicking from the ground, as well as out of hand. Loughrea took a early lead when their pack rumbled up the field and secured a very kickable penalty.
Wegians backline were dangerous, when they got the ball, and some excellent forays into the opposition's half provided them with a couple of difficult, but well converted, penalties that put the home side in front by 3 points.
However Loughrea backs showed their excellent skills when scored a superbly worked try from distance, as the ball was swept across the backline for a converted score.
The 4 point lead was extended to 7 shortly after, as the dominant Loughrea scrum secured a straight forward kick at goal.
Half-time - Galwgians 2nds 6 Loughrea 13
The sides swapped penalties early in the second half, as Loughrea's pack kept the pressure on, while the Wegians back made the most of the scraps that came their way.
Loughrea looked to have secured victory after a sustained attack led to a try in the corner and a lead of 12 points with no more than 10 minutes left on the clock.
However the pacy Wegians backline were given a bit more ball to play with as the forwards tired, and they showed their undoubted potential by scoring two scintillating tries, but the vicious wind prevented either from being converted and gave the visitors a well earned victory.
