Match Report
Galwegians’ unbeaten run in Division 2B came to an abrupt end as they were stunned by second-placed Clogher Valley, who produced an extraordinary display to win by 31 points at Crowley Park on Saturday.
The visitors were clearly up for the contest in their pursuit of a home play-off place and targeted the recently crowned champions from the outset. Playing with the aid of a first-half breeze, the Blues made a promising start. An early break from Stevie Mannion created several attacking phases, which ended with captain Dylan Keane being held up over the line.
The Ulstermen, however, were giving as good as they got, with both sides playing expansive, attacking rugby in search of the opening score. The visitors struck first on 22 minutes when they forced a penalty following their first meaningful attack inside the Galwegians 22, and out-half David Maxwell converted.
Galwegians continued to threaten in the second quarter, but the final pass simply would not stick, with errors also beginning to creep in. The visitors then delivered a sucker punch just before half-time. A deep clearance from Mannion was fielded outside his 22 by Maxwell, who broke down the left and released Taine Haire. The full-back’s pace saw him elude the defensive cover for the game’s opening try, and Maxwell added an excellent conversion to give Clogher a morale-boosting 10–0 lead at the break.
The hosts needed a strong start to the second half to work their way back into the game and began with intent. However, the clinical edge that had characterised their season deserted them. On several occasions they broke the initial defensive line, only for the move to break down against a resolute Clogher defence.
In contrast the visitors were far more efficient when chances came their way. After their strong set-piece earned two quick penalties in succession approaching the hour mark, they set up camp on the Galwegians line. Following a series of pick-and-goes, substitute back-row Tommie Coulter forced his way over for a crucial try, converted by Maxwell to extend the lead to 17–0.
This gave the hosts a mountain to climb facing a three-score deficit and now playing into a strengthening breeze, and they struggled to gain meaningful territory. Clogher simply soaked up all the pressure and used the wind effectively to keep the Blues pinned in their own half for long periods.
With time running out, Galwegians were forced to chase the game, and a turnover inside their own 22 proved decisive. The ball was moved wide to Maxwell, who sprinted down the left touchline to score near the corner and effectively end the contest. He converted his own try for good measure to cap an outstanding individual performance.
The Blues continued to battle to the final whistle in search of a consolation score, but their day was summed up in the closing moments. With the hosts pressing near the posts, what looked a certain try-scoring pass was intercepted by Clogher centre Josh Kyle, who raced almost the length of the field to secure a bonus-point try.
It completed a perfect afternoon for the visitors, who delivered a deserved victory over the stunned league winners. For Wegians, the unbeaten run comes to an end, but attention now turns to next weekend’s trip north to face Rainey Old Boys, where they will look to return to winning ways and rediscover the clinical edge that has defined their season.
