Match Report
A sun-kissed Crowley Park provided a picturesque backdrop on Saturday, but it was the visitors who departed with the spoils as Galwegians suffered a disappointing defeat in their first home fixture of the AIL Division 2A campaign. With both sides having lost their opening encounters, the desperation to register league points was evident from the first whistle.
Shannon made the brighter start and established an early lead in the 13th minute. Following concerted pressure and successive penalties at the five-metre lineout, the Galwegians defence was sucked infield, allowing left-wing Luke Doyle to be sent clear to touch down in the corner. Out-half Jamie Gavin was unable to add the touchline conversion.
The hosts conjured the perfect response. Attacking purposefully straight from the restart, the Blues strung together a series of imposing phases. Number eight Aaron O’Brien took a superb line to crash through the middle of the Shannon defence, dotting down under the posts for his first try for the club. Young Australian out-half Jacob Johnson added the simple conversion to put the home side in front near the end of the first quarter.
Galwegians commanded the next period and engineered opportunities to extend their advantage, but they were unable to make their dominance pay. The momentum shifted before the half-hour mark with the unfortunate withdrawal of Blues’ prop Luke Murtagh due to an ankle injury. His young replacement, Jaynel Almanzar Cordero, had barely taken to the field when he was dispatched to the sin-bin for a deliberate knock-on.
Harsh as it may have been, the visitors wasted no time in exploiting the numerical advantage. Replicating the wide movement of their opening score, Shannon once again stretched the Galwegians defence, creating the space for centre Harry Long to cut through on the left for another unconverted try.
Trailing 10-7 and restored to fifteen men, the Blues dug deep. Applying severe pressure right on the stroke of half-time, they were duly rewarded when Johnson cleverly stepped his opposite man to claim a well-taken try. He excellently converted his own score to nudge Galwegians into a 14-10 lead at the interval.
Turning around with the elements at their backs, Shannon dictated the territorial battle in the second half. Galwegians defended comfortably through the third quarter, absorbing the pressure without their line being genuinely threatened. However, as the half wore on, the physical toll began to show. With senior forwards Rob Holian and Jarrad Butler hauled ashore, in contrast the visitors introduced effective firepower from their own bench.
With the Galwegians lineout beginning to creak, Shannon reclaimed the lead on 70 minutes. Full-back Oisín Hade found the time and space to cut inside and touch down near the posts, before converting his own try. Moments later, the visitors won a penalty near halfway, and Hade made no mistake from the tee to stretch the gap to six points.
Desperately needing a spark to salvage the result, the Blues found it with six minutes remaining. Winger Oisin McKey launched an excellent break down the right flank and chipped ahead. Vice-captain Rob Deacy was the first to react in the ensuing footrace, touching down at the corner flag for the hosts' third try. Facing a fierce breeze, Johnson’s touchline conversion was nigh impossible, leaving Galwegians trailing by a single point entering the dying moments.
The late drama did not fall the home side's way, as discipline faltered under pressure. Substitute hooker Conor Joyce was shown a yellow card, and deep into stoppage time, Shannon capitalised with a dominant five-metre lineout maul. Sub Brendan Dougan claimed the decisive try in the left corner, sealing a 25-19 victory for the visitors and leaving a frustrated Galwegians side to console themselves with a losing bonus point.
It leaves plenty for Head Coach Brendan Guilfoyle to ponder as Galwegians prepare for a formidable away trip to Cashel next Saturday.
