Match Report

Discipline costs the Seconds a spot in the Semis.

The Men's Seconds narrowly miss out on a spot in the Junior Cup semi-finals as they fall short of the mark vs J1B side Ballinrobe.

Wegians fell behind early on as Kevin Smith saw yellow for lashing out at ruck time and Ballinrobe capitalising on our ill-discipline with two early penalties to lead 6-0.

A moment of magic from Captain Eamon Dowling saw Wegians back into the game a clever chip and chase bouncing perfectly saw Hairy cross the whitewash. The conversion just wide from Shane O Brien.

Wegians had begun to find their flow a well-worked backs move with a grubber kick at the end saw Josh Munn gather and touch down for Galwegians’ second in just three minutes, O Brien making sure of the kick Galwegians in the lead 12-6.

Ballinrobe stuck to their game plan carrying hard at the Wegian’s defence, Nicky Lawless earning himself a yellow card, checking the run of a Ballinrobe attacker Wegians back to fourteen men and the relentless Ballinrobe carries continued.

Wegians survived the rest of the half going into the break leading 12-6.

The blues struck early in the second half with thanks to the power of Abdullaq as he crashed over to extend the home side’s lead.

But Ballinrobe hadn’t given up following a series of errors the Mayo side found themselves on the front foot hammering away at the Galwegians line which eventually broke down allowing Ballinrobe to reduce the deficit the score 19-13.

A series of poor judgments and penalties from the home side followed by a red card for Lawless for a deliberate knock-on was exactly what the visitors need to get themselves back in the game, scoring within a couple of phases of the sending-off. With the conversion going astray the home side held on to a one point lead going in to the last quarter.

Ballinrobe had the wind at their backs continuing to implement their game plan of the Galway boys forcing a penalty in front of the posts to seal the game.

Ballinrobe advance to the semi-finals.
