Match Report
Galwegians Men’s Seconds won the Connacht J1C League title when a super performance saw them comprehensively overcome the challenge of rivals Corrib at Crowley Park on Saturday. Defending against a strong breeze in the first-half, the Blues were being put under pressure early doors by Corrib who opened the scoring with a second minute penalty from Evan Flynn. However the hosts grew into the game and drew level on 20 minutes with a penalty from Eoin Cuddy. Wegians struck a decisive blow with the first try of the game before half-time, when winger Eoghan Fahey gathered a kick inside his own half before running at the opposition, evading several tacklers for a brilliant individual try under the posts which was converted by Cuddy.
This put Wegians 10-3 ahead at the break, and with the wind at their backs in the second-half it looked ominous for the visitors. The home pack were starting to get on top, giving scrum-half Luke Casserly the platform to get his backline moving. They would soon extend their lead and once again it was Man of the Match Fahey who got on the end of a superb skip pass from Casserly to dot down in the left corner for an unconverted try.
It was all Wegians now and when Rob McHugh scored under the posts in the 49th minute, which was converted by Cuddy, Corrib had an absolute mountain to climb at 22-3. Any slim chance of a comeback was quashed when the very impressive McHugh scored his second try on the hour mark, again converted by Cuddy to put the result beyond any doubt.
Although clearly second best, Corrib to their credit refused to lie down and they scored their first try on 69 minutes through Shane Walsh. However Wegians were not finished and they managed a fifth try scored in the right corner by MJ Duffy in the 75th minute, before Corrib got a late consolation score from Finn O’Loughlin giving a final scoreline of 34-13. This means that the Blues Seconds are promoted to Division J1B next year, and captain James Deacy was presented with the trophy by Robert Lahiff of the Connacht Branch amidst jubilant scenes.
