Match Report

Galwegians 2nds continued their run of good form in 2023 with an impressive win against Sligo in the Junior Cup round of 16 on Sunday.

Galwegians drew first blood with Josh Munn showing his pace finishing in the corner, Shane O Brien adding on the conversion.

Ill-discipline at the breakdown allowed Galwegians the platform to set up a strong maul for Nicky Pfeiffer to bulldoze his way over the line for the second try of the game with the kick converted by O Brien, the Blues in the lead 14-0 with only 20 mins on the clock.

It didn’t take long before Wegians added another, a well-worked line-out maul saw second-row Eoghan Birmingham cross the whitewash, O Brien making no mistake with the conversion.

Sligo looked like they were about to pull one back after a great line break but a superb tackle from Munn and a turnover from Eamon Dowling alleviated any threat.

Wegians showed the skill set of their backs with a great string of passes to put Ciarán Ó Flaithearta away in the corner, O Brien missing the conversion from a difficult angle.

Galwegians led at the break 26-0.

Sligo started the second half with a bit more intent, carrying strongly and hitting hard putting Wegians under some serious pressure but a high tackle sent substitute Christian Headley to the bin meaning the visitors were down to 14 men with an even bigger hill to climb.

Wegians took full advantage of the extra man with Joe Agbo touching down for his third try in just two games back.

Sligo eventually broke through the Wegians’ defence, out-half David Keyes put on the footwork along with a burst of pace to put some points on the board for Sligo.

Unfortunately for Sligo, the joy was short-lived with Aleni Lagaaia killing any hope of a comeback, great strength and fantastic footwork saw the centre finish out the afternoon of scoring, the final score 36-5.

Galwegians keep their cup dreams alive as they progress to the quarterfinals vs Ballinrobe Sunday the 22nd.
