Match Report
The Men’s Seconds continued their run of good form in the league with a convincing win in Crowley Park last Sunday. The lads played a very expansive style of rugby which allowed the to cross the whitewash a total of eight times to secure their place in the promotion play-offs.
The game got underway with Carrick coming out of the blocks strong putting pressure on the Wegians defence. The blues put themselves under even more pressure through ill-discipline and poor game management which lead to Carrick’s first and only points of the game.
Wegians showed the strength of their pack with Nicky Pfeiffer opening the home sides account powering over to put Wegians in the lead 5-3
Wegians soon settled into the game with a string of passes through the backline to see Ben Murphy take off down the left wing to add to the home sides tally, the conversion going astray from Senior Kennedy.
The blues went on to score two more tries before the halftime whistle Eoin Tarmey bulling the Carrick defence to crash over before only moments later Hairy broke away to touch down under the posts both tries converted from the boot of Ciaran Ó Flaithearta to see us lead 24-3 at half time.
With the bonus point secured the home side began to play with a bit more flare exploiting Carrick’s weaknesses out wide, both Senior and Matt Dever touched down in similar style, breaking through the centre to add their names to the score sheet to increase our lead 36-3.
O’Flaithearta added to his tally quick hands to get the ball out wide to exploit a narrow Carrick defensive line saw him touch down for Wegians seventh try.
Rex Aghabueze showed what he was all about ferocious pace saw him outrun three Carrick defenders to top of Wegians afternoon of scoring 48-3.
With a well-earned bonus-point win we prepare to host OLBC in Crowley Park this coming Sunday, a win will ensure a home Semi-Final as they continue their run for promotion.
