Match Report
Another inspired performance from Galwegians Thirds as they picked up their first victory of the BOI J2 15 Aside Competition against Gort with a conclusive 36-6 victory. Thirds started their season off well with a friendly win over Seapoint and a run-out with the Seconds in the Curley Cup. This would be their first major test of the campaign with many keen to impress.
An emphatic beginning to the game saw them open the scoring with Liam Marmion. Some great scrummage inside the 22 sees Aidan Murphy take off, dragging a whole host of Gort players towards the ten-metre line. The ball went through the hands of Marmion for the try, which would turn out to be the first of many this afternoon. Tony Kelly converting for the two bonus points saw them take an early 7-0 lead.
A lineout from halfway was the catalyst for Galwegians’ second of the day, going through the hands once more and Danny Carr coming over the try putting the hosts twelve points ahead. A stoppage for a Gort injury gave time for the players to recover before Liam Marmion got his second of the game to give the Blues a 17-0 advantage.
Gort began to apply pressure prior to the end of the first half which saw a yellow card given to us for continued infringements. Gort kept Galwegians honest and on our line but managed to clear our lines and get up to half-way before half-time.
Galwegians’ Aidan Murphy was the third try scorer of the game to grab their fourth overall, running between the posts to further extend their advantage. A straightforward conversion meaning they now led 24 points to nil.
Penalties would try and keep Gort in the game with two penalties in succession for Wegians being penalised at the breakdown. Six points from the Gort fly half meant they were finally on the score sheet.
But it was Galwegians day and two more tries sealed the deal with the forwards Bawney Hayes and Dylan Donohue rising to the occasion and stamping their authority near the end. The final score saw Galwegians comprehensively win by 36-6 with the perfect start to the tournament. Congratulations to the man of the match Dylan Duffy who put in a great shift on the wing and in defence.
Our next fixture will be against Claremorris on the 24th of September away at Colt Park in their first game of the competition.
