Match Report
It was very much a case of start as you mean to go on for the men’s thirds, as a comfortable victory over Claremorris cemented a place in the final of the J2 Cup final. A solid start was the foundation for success, with ‘Wegians having two tries on the board before the match was a quarter of the way through.
Eire McCarthy and Dave Gallagher both crossed the whitewash in the early stages to put the hosts 12-0 to the good. Tighearnan O Frighil was the man tasked with conversions, and he stood up to the challenge, knocking over seven from nine in a competent display with the boot.
By half-time, the score was 31-0, and the game was good as done. Captain Dinny Mulvey crossed for the third, with the bonus also secured before the break prior to McCarthy’s second. The half-time team talk obviously involved some mention of ruthlessness, with Neill Walsh making an instant impact on the scoreboard a minute into the second half.
Prop Dylan Donohue also scored a few minutes later, before a response from Claremorris ensured it wasn’t to be a whitewash. But Galwegians would have the final say, with Shane O’Connor grabbing his second. Dave Gallagher and Larry Corcoran added further gloss, as ‘Wegians ran away with it in a successful day at the office.
