Match Report
Wegians U20s got their first win in the JP Fanagan Leinster Premier 2 League with a hard-earned but deserved win at home to neighbours and rivals Corinthians last Sunday.
The Blues started well and after the visitors were reduced to 14 men for an early high tackle, a long-range penalty fell just short. However they didn't have to wait long to take the lead, which came after some great ball through the hands, Dylan Keane going over out wide for an unconverted try and a 5-0 lead.
However it was a short-lived lead as the visitors went on the attack straight from the restart, and some poor defending saw the Blues cough up a try, Tuan O'Malley claiming the touch down which Bryan Casburn converted to give Corinthians a 5-7 advantage.
The young Blues responded well and after many phases of play, centre Zak Rather crossed under the posts for a hard-earned try, which was converted this time by captain James Deacy to restore a five-point lead for the hosts, which was how it stayed at half-time.
The second-half ebbed and flowed with both sides having their opportunities. The visitors were held up over the Wegians line, giving the hosts a relieving drop-out with the new rules in play. The Blues had two further opportunities to stretch their lead with penalties but failed to add to their tally. Whereas the visitors had a great chance with an attacking 5m lineout, but the home pack turned it over and cleared their lines.
So no further score in the second-half gave the win to Wegians who open their winning account in this tough competitive League, bringing their points tally up to six from two games after escaping with two bonus points from UCD last weekend.
