Match Report

With players rested for the senior match with Ballina, the u20s went into a crucial match with Buccaneers with a strong squad. On a perfect day for rugby, the rugby was far from perfect. Easy on the eye for a defence coach if nobody else, with the match scoreless as half-time approached.

For Buccaneers, it did not approach soon enough. Superb line-speed from the ‘Wegians young guns forced a loose pass. Evan Brady was the beneficiary of the misplaced ball, powering over near the posts.

The sharpness was a bit of a theme for the away side, and scrum-half Kelvin Langan showed he was no slouch with a quick tap that caught Buccs off guard. A subsequent lineout and lineout maul saw flanker Hugh Duffy cross the whitewash, with James Deacy’s extras doubling the lead to 0-14.

A struggling home side brought themselves back into contention with a nice solo effort from their fullback. The conversion was landed and some impactful substitutes put ‘Wegians under some pressure of their own.

However some impressive game management from a young team ensured they held out until the dying stages, with a huge victory secured thanks to a booming penalty from Langan, who had taken over kicking responsibilities from the substituted James Deacy.

All in all, a successful day at the office.
