Match Report
Galwegians got back to winning ways with a hard fought win over a hard working Westport with a 3 try to 1 victory at Crowley Park on Sunday.
A capricious wind was blowing diagonally across the field, slightly favouring the visitors in the first half. Westport made good use of the conditions to keep Wegians pinned in their own half for the first quarter. However solid defending kept them at bay. Wegians slowly but surely got a foothold in the game and their extravagant running game was beginning to cause Westport all sorts of problems.
However a mixture of unforced errors and determined Westport defending limited Wegians scoring to a single penalty from centre David Clarke despite controlling the second period of the first half. Half-time - Wegians 2nds 3 Westport 0
Westport exploded out of the blocks in the second half and after 6 minutes of territorial dominance they got a deserved try when ex-Wegian Kevin Corcoran went on a powerful run that ended with him crashing over in the corner. 46 mins - Wegians 2nds 3 Wesport 5.
The young home side, with only one player over 25, dug in and started to pile the pressure on. Eventually they got their noses in front when Clarke slotted his second kick of the day. 57 mins - Wegians 2nds 6 Westport 5.
The game hung in the balance as both sides tried to impose themselves as the final quarter started. It took an astonishing break from Wegian captain and out half Ross Shaughnessy to break the spirit of the visitors. From a scrum just inside their own 22 the 24 year old, a veritable veteran in this side, made a slashing break to get through the first line of defence, he expertly swerved around the fullback before outstripping the cover defense to dot down under the posts, Clarke converted. 68 mins - Wegians 2nds 13 Westport 5.
Wegians immediately turned the screw as they powered down the field and from a ruck on the short side, replacement scrum-half Martin Connolly expertly fed flanker Danny Deegan, who executed a smart switch with prop Martin Fox, who in turn drew 2 defenders before feeding fellow prop Paul "Horse" Griffin. Griffin threw and outrageous overhead pass to winger Danny Carr who scorched down the wing to score the killer try. 70 mins - Wegians 2nds 18 Westport 5.
Westport worked hard to get a losing bonus, but were unable to break down the home teams frugal defense. Fulltime Galwegians 2nds 18 Westport 5.
