Match Report
Galwegians 2nds started this match as though they were recovering from a long hard night celebrating the first Heineken Cup match ever played in Galway.
The hangover lasted the whole first half and 10 minutes of the second half at which point they were 3 scores in arrears, and deservedly so as Corinthians were playing the better rugby. 17-0 after 50 minutes.
However with the wind picking up the foginess of thought and deed appeared to be blown away as the sky blues suddenly started playing something approaching rugby and began to put the home team under pressure.
The improved form from Wegians led to their first try when an outrageous offload from prop "Sonny Ba" Naughton continued a cracking move which ended with a barrelling charge over the line from hooker Callum O'Connell to touch down. An equally outrageous conversion from the left touchline from centre Dave Clarke got Wegians to within 10 points. 17-7
The visitors had their tails up and were running everything. Another flowing move led to the second try when an intricate interchange of passes between Clarke and Naughton bamboozled not only the appreciative Wegians supporters but also the Corinthians defense and Clarke dotted down under the posts. Clarke was too knackered to convert and left it to the trusty boot of outhalf Ross Shaughnessy. 17-14.
Time was now ebbing away but Wegians were now flying and they pounded the Corinthian line in search of a winning score. A number of 5 metre scrums had the now extremely vocal away support baying for a try and it duly arrived after a well timed blindside break from Shaughnessy saw him jink his way through a despairing defense to touch down in the left corner and put Wegians in the lead for the first time. 17-19.
There was only a minute left on the clock and Wegians expertly ran down the time and complete a massive turnaround and win by 2 points.
