Match Report
On a bitterly cold night in north Galway, Galwegians broke a 4 game losing streak with probably their most comprehensive performance of the season when defeating a fired up home side by 13 points.
Wegians were on the score board early when centre Dave Clarke slotted the first penalty of the match. 2 mins Tuam 0 Wegians 3.
The visitors dominated the early exchanges and played the game in the right areas of the field. Clarke poped over the next penalty opportunity that was afforded him to extend the sky blues lead. 14 mins 0-6.
A couple of lenghty stoppages for injuries disrupted the momentum that Wegians had built up and Tuam got back into the game. However, baffingly, the opted for a 5 metre scrum from a penalty instead of taking the points on offer and Wegians successfully disrupted the subsequent attack.
The game had become a bit of a ding dong battle at this point as both sides were making good headway running the ball. Wegians could have scored in the corner after a flowing move but the final pass didn’t go to hand.
Tuam worked their upfield as halftime approached and scored a good try after running a quick penalty with wing Eric Helion scoring. Halftime Tuam 7 Galwegians 6.
The second half was a bit more fractous and Wegian prop Doran McHugh found himself in the sinbin afer 48 minutes. However this had little impact on Wegians attacking capabilities and their little Napolean of an outhalf Ross Shaughnessy scored an excellent try after the forwards had put him on the front foot with some rumbling mauls. 53 mins 7-13.
Tuam got back to within 3 points with a well struck penalty from centre McDonagh. 60 mins 10-13.
The game became something of a scrumfest as both sides opted to take scrums whenever the opportunity arose, with Wegians eventually coming out on top in that department. Wegians eased the pressure when Clarke notched another penalty. 75 mins 10-16.
Tuam were denyed a losing bonus point when Shaughnessy scored his second try of the match with a slashing outside break. Fulltime – Tuam 10 Galwegians 2nds 23.
