Match Report
On a night that would have had Noah chuckling in his workshop as the rain sheeted down in Castlebar, Galwegians young tyros (with a decent sprinkling of experience in the pack) produced an intelligent mixture of go forward handling and kicking rugby as they continued their march up the Junior Div 1 table.
The night start with the sort of misty West of Ireland rain that doesn't show up on the radar, but as the night went on the wind got stronger and the rain got heavier, but it had little affect on the exuberance of the Wegians 2nds who, true to form tried running everything in the early stages.
However eventually outhalf Ross Shaughnessy brought some order to proceedings and made good use of the boot to put the sky blues in the right areas of the field and force the first score of the game from centre Darragh Leader who knocked over an early penalty. 0-3
Wegians kept the pressure up with captain Sean Egan leading by example as he charged through the home side on a number of occasions before wing Shane Thompstone went on a slaloming, tackle free run from inside his own half to get the visitors first try of the match. 0-10
Wegians survived some Castlebar pressure as they looked to get back into the game, but booming clearances eased the pressure on the sky blues before another scything break from Thomstone, with the help of hooker Calum O'Connell keeping a number of the home team otherwise engaged, led to his second score of the night. 0-17
Wegians intelligent use of the strengthening breeze kept the pressure on the home side and this led to the third try of the night when a clever short lineout throw from O'Connell to prop Ger Fahy caught Castlebar unawares and a deft offload sent veteren second row Spencer Perkins charging over for the line under the posts. 0-24
On the stroke of half-time Leader popped over his 4 successful kick of the night. 0-27
Wegians now had to face into the teeth of the ever increasing wind and rain but they took everything that the home side threw at them as the handling became more and more of a lottery.
Having weather the early second half storm Wegians worked their way down field and scrum half Marty Connolly expertly recovered a clever chip ahead to score the bonus point try for Wegians. 0-32
The game was now a completely fractious affair as handling was a total lottery leading to a bountiful amount of scrums Wegians got theif final score when substitute winger Andy Fallon finished off a flowing Wegians move. 0-39
The home team went looking for a pride restoring score but a defiant Wegians stand on their own line for the last 5 minutes prevent the home side registering a score leaving Wegians in third.
