Match Report

Galwegians 2nds find themselves in a relegation battle after suffering their 3rd defeat in a row in the Connacht J1A League away to OLBC on Sunday.

The Sky Blues appear have forgotten how to win. For the second week in a row they had enough possession and territory to win the match but somehow contrived a way to lose it.

OLBC started the match with passion and fire and their early dominance was rewarded with a penalty that fullback David Dooley cooly slotted. 4 mins - OLBC 3 Galwegians 0.

Wegians stormed back into the game but initially could not take their chances to score. Eventually after 26 mins Wegians pressure got the score that they had been working for when flanker Danny Deegan blocked down an attempted clearance. He chased the block down, got a lucky bounce that evaded the scrambling defense and flopped over for a Wegians try under the posts. Out-half Dave Clarke slotted the conversion. 26 mins - OLBC 3 Galwegians 2nds 7.

The rest of the half was spent between the two 22s as neither side could take full control of the game. Half-time OLBC 3 Galwegians 7.

The second half disintergrated even further into a dour local derby tussle with mistakes being the dominant feature of the match between teams that inevitably know each other too well.

Wegians thought they had extended their lead when a slick backline move put wing Ronan Moore over in the corner, but the nippy winger was adjudged to have put his foot in touch prior to grounding the ball.

It was one of the numerous mistakes from the visitors that eventually turned the game in the home sides favour.

OLBC were down to 14 men when they got the winning score from wing Eamonn Dowling. Wegians failed to excute a simple clearance opportunity, for the second week in succession, and OBLC turn the ball over. From the ensuing ruck centre Matt o'Mahoney clipped a clever kick through the onrushing defense and Dowling beat the retreating cover to score in the corner. 71 mins OLBC 8 Galwegians 7

Although Wegians pounded away at the OLBC line for the remainder of the match, the fired up home side denied their city rivals the score they craved leaving the home side winners by the minimum amount. Fulltime OLBC 8 Galwegians 7.
