Match Report
Social rugby can be tough when playing games on Sunday so when the opportunity arises the 3rd’s like to take full advantage. So Friday evening last 32 lads filled Farrell Travels ‘Party Bus’ and headed to Mayo to take on Castlebar 2nds.
After 3 wins on the bounce and the chance to go top of the league the lads were in great spirits and with the offer of free booze for a win, it ensured the focus was firmly on leaving Mayo with nothing but the win and the 140 cans chilling on the bus.
The match itself was nothing to write home about so I won’t bore you too much with it. It was won 32-15 with 4 tries scored by Colm Mclovin, Justin ‘show and go’ Wilson, Dave ‘biggest winger in Connacht’ Renton and Dan ‘the man’ Ryan. Again the backs outscored the forwards 3-1 to continue their major improvement in the backline this season, to compliment the ever reliable powerful pack.
It was cold and soggy and to be fair not the seasons best performance conceding 2 sloppy tries but after last season’s 2 defeats against bar including the cup defeat, revenge felt somewhat sweet. It also took the 3rd’s into unchartered territory of topping the league table at Christmas, and the season is now becoming one of massive promise.
Man of the match: - Spesh, standing in at late notice and completing a solid performance to keep the backline firing
Toilet Seat: - Martin Keaveney for well unpleasant comments about the opposition. (I think some lads are trying to win the free pint!!)
The Journey home was mighty craic with one dodgy song sang followed by another until we arrived back to the clubhouse at 12:30am, dropped off the bags and hit town to continue the night until the early hours!. It was only at 2am in town when it was commented that we spent over an hour on the N17 and did not even sing the Saw Doctors classic, ah well next time we will start with it.
Thanks to the extras that joined us on the bus namely Noel Leader (leading us in song with the Blues), John Folan, Tony Fitzmaurice and Sean Egan. All of whom kept Mickey, Pat and Leighton sane whilst song after song was being murdered by the forwards.
Next up in the league after the Winter break so nicely given to us by the branch is Corinthians (a) 22nd Jan, training this week followed by 2 weeks off and resuming on the 5th Jan. It is hoped to get a friendly or two in before the Corinthians game to keep in shape and all that!!!
Happy Christmas all let’s hope 2012 starts as well as 2011 has finished.
