Match Report

For once Crowley Park was a quiet place on Saturday with various training sessions being cancelled due to the weather, and other teams not scheduled to play. However one squad was not going to let the weather interfere with a much anticipated match, Galwegians U13 Blues v Galwegians U14 Whites. This was a highly anticipated match, as both teams are now playing 15 a side rugby this season, and are now about half way through their league fixtures. Both teams have experienced the joy of winning, and the pain of losing, but with the Blues going into this match with a better win/loss ratio.

Early on both teams tried to play flowing rugby looking to get the ball out wide, and but for a last ditch tackle there might have been an early score. However the players quickly realised that it wasn’t the day for flowing backline moves as both teams struggled to adapt to the windy, greasy conditions, realising there was nothing to be gained by kicking the ball into the wind. The result being that each team, when playing with the wind, outscored the other in that half.

It was a very competitive game with no quarter being asked for, or given, by either team who were very evenly matched all over the park. All players gave their utmost, but neither team was able to dominate the other, though not for the want of trying. Both teams kept battling away and the result was in the balance right to the final whistle with the Whites eventual winners, 19 – 15.

There was a large support at the game who promptly retired to the clubhouse for tea and treats generously supplied by the parents, and for the obligatory post mortum. Spectators were in general agreement that it was a very high standard game; the players have made tremendous progress over the past weeks; and that the future for this Galwegians squad is very bright.
