Match Report

The much awaited SF clash between the improving Galwegians U15 team and their main rivals Corinthians got underway in blustery conditions on Saturday afternoon.

Wegians started well and took the fight to Corinthians creating two or three half chances in the opening ten minutes. However Corinthians scored against the run of play with a speculative kick and chase. Their winger sprinted down the line and was awarded the try somewhat controversially as both his feet were in touch. The local linesman “did not see it” and Wegians found themselves 5-0 down, the conversion was missed.

Showing spirit and determination Wegians no 4 Aidan Crowe switched to the back of a scrum ten yards out from the Corinthians line and he picked the ball and drove with force for the line, the score was awarded 5-5, sadly the conversion was missed from an acute angle.

Ten minutes later after multiple battles across the pitch Wegians found themselves ten meters out from the Corinthians line and arriving at speed again was Aidan Crowe who powered his way through a group of players to get the ball down to give Wegians a 5-10 lead. The conversion was missed in the windy conditions.

As the half came to a close sustained pressure from the Corinthians forwards told as the scored a try after multiple phases of play on the left side of the pitch.
The half ended with the teams tied 10-10.

As the second half kicked the Wegians front row added Ben McHugh fresh from his Connacht lightweight (63kg) victory that morning. The ‘Raging Bull’ momentarily forgot he had swapped arenas and swung for the large Corinthians no 5 and found himself sin-binned for five minutes near the start of the half.

Wegians fourteen men played with grit and determination and moved the ball phase after phase from their own 22 to be camped on the Corinthians line for around five minutes. Once again Aidan Crowe came charging from Colin Counihan’s sharp tap, Aidan stepped the first point of contact and then use his power to drive over the line for the decisive leading score, 10-15, Wegians were ahead again.

A great conversion from Tiarnan Leen put Wegians 7 points up 10-17.
Corinthians responded well from their coaches urging to fight and after much pressure they got in for a try under the posts late on in the game. 15-17. A simple conversion saw the teams tied up for the third time in the match and soon after the final whistle went for 17-17.

A great performance from all the Wegians team, Man of the Match was awarded to Aidan Crowe with three fine tries.

The replay is scheduled for this Sunday 3rd February at 12 noon on the main pitch in Galwegians, all club support welcome.
