Match Report
Galwegians u19s had to battle hard to overcome their city neighbours at Cloonacauneen on Sunday. The first half saw some bright open play from the sky blues who looked threatening when they ran ball wide. Their enterprising brand of rugby resulted in a magnificent opening try. Phase after phase of controlled and incisive attacking play drove them into their opponents 22. The Corinthian defence eventually ran out of numbers, territory and steam allowing ex-Roscrea boy Trevor Higgins to touch down for a try on his debut for Galwegians.
Wegians continued to test their opponents defence and their patience and ball control was rewarded when a good break by Sean O'Brien was capitalised upon by Ronan O'Donnell who ran an excellent support line and finished well under the posts. Jordan Dooley converted to give Galwegians a 12-0 lead. But just before the break the Corinthian's tight head Aodhan Glynn managed to squeeze the ball over the line following a 10 meter penalty. The converted score left Corinthians trailing by only 5 points at the interval.
Unfortunately the second half degenerated into a close quarter battle with the strong cross wind making passing difficult and kicking a lottery. Despite a massive penalty count in their favour the home team failed to convert their wealth of second half possession and territory into a single score thanks to a resolute and dogged Wegian defence.
Galwegians 2 wins from 2 sees them top the table table alongside Monivea and Sligo with the highly fancied and defending All Ireland Champions Buccaneers succumbing to their second away 1 point defeat in as many weekends. Buccs will want to get the defence of their title back on track asap with a resounding win against their next opponents ... Galwegians!
