Match Report

The Galwegians-Oughterard U20s had another successful outing last Sunday against an Old Belvedere side that had topped their qualifying group convincingly.

We came out of the blocks firing and after a strong initial surge by Brian McSweeney, Matthew Farrell kicked deep into Belvos 22 chased by Robert Deacy who caught the defender on the Belvo line to set us up in a great attacking position. The resulting scrum and phases saw us recycle and an Adam Cunningham cross field kick was gathered by the lightening Ben Murphy to run in for a try.

We continued to bring the game to Belvo and were rewarded with a Robert Deacy penalty after 20 minutes to give us an 8-0 lead. Injuries to Brian McSweeney and Robert Deacy disrupted things a bit but we kept plugging and another penalty by Matthew Farrell brought us to 11-0 at half time.

Against the wind in the second half we allowed Belvo to start getting a foot hold in the game. However another Matthew Farrell penalty brought us to a 14-0 lead. The final quarter became the battle royal.

Belvo got in for a 7 pointer. 8 minutes to go and we get a yellow card with the exhausted Shane Joyce being sent to the bin. We hold out from the Belvo offensive only to get another yellow with only minutes on the clock. An absolutely heroic 4 minutes by 13 players held our line to secure another win to leave us joint top on 10 points.

Next up is the first of the big derby games with an away fixture against Corinthians on Sunday 3rd November.
