Match Report

Wegians completed the double over NUIG in Crowley Park on Sunday, coming out on top in an entertaining game played in perfect conditions.

As we have done in the past we made life difficult by conceding a try within minutes of the kick off, College's Tomas Forde touching down close to the posts giving Mark Forde a simple conversion.

Thankfully this early setback spurred our warriors on and, shortly after the restart finished off sustained pressure with scrum half Barry Walshe scoring with full back Dylan Hamill adding the points.

It remained nip and tuck thereafter and College went ahead again through a penalty from Forde..Before half time Wegians impressive flanker Rory Fleming crossed for a fine try , again converted by Hamill to leave the home side 14 - 10 to the good at the break.

Our boys extended their lead with a Hamill penalty after ten minutes, but, again NUIG came back and were themselves good value with a try from Brian O'Malley, converted by Forde, to level the scores again at 17 points apiece.

Wegians managed to keep up the tempo and eaed away on the scoreboard with another Hamill penalty followed by another Walshe try also converted.

With the score now 27 points to 17 with about 10 minutes remaining one could have been forgiven for thinking the result was in the bag. College had other ideas, however, and stormed back with a try from Samuel Bernard, converted by the reliable Forde, the home side now hanging on.

The siege was thankfully lifted and we held our nerve to run out narrow winners.

Next up is the Purcell Cup next Sunday at home against Dublin University for the third time this season. The game is at 3 o'clock so please come and support.
