Match Report
Galwegians fell agonisingly short in this J P Fanagan League Qualifier played at Crowley Park on Sunday.
Coached this season by Brian “ Beano “ McClearn and Norman Deacy of that legendary Galwegian family, we were faced with a very strong Navan front five but nonetheless raced into a 17-0 lead after just twenty minutes of play.
Centre Robert Deacy (4th Generation!) was first to score touching down under the posts with just 5 minutes on the clock. He converted himself and then also converted a fine try by winger Ben Murphy, A penalty kick moved the scoreboard on to 17 before Navan got going. However they turned the tide completely before half time scoring a converted try on 30 mins.
Adam Cunningham seemed to stop the rot with another home try which was not converted but Navan’s forward strength told and they were rewarded with two converted tries to leave the score at the break 22 – 21.
A penalty from Matthew Farrell stopped the rot briefly early in the second half but Navan went ahead for the first time when their forwards were again instrumental in getting over the line. A Brian McSweeney try converted by Farrell put us back in front with 10 minutes remaining at 32 – 26 but Navan finished with a flourish capitalising on mistakes from our lads in clearing their lines to score to the left of the posts. Their kicker kept his nerve to add the points and secure his side victory by a single point.
Next up is Seapoint on Sunday 29th but it is understood they have conceded. We travel to old rivals Buccaneers the following week and would appreciate every support that members can provide.
