Match Report

This Cup tie was played in excellent conditions on the Main Pitch last Sunday. Clontarf travelled with only 14 players so the scrums were uncontested throughout the 80 minutes.

Both teams started with great enthusiasm and an offside penalty was awarded to the visitors in the seventh minute and converted to give a 3-0 lead to Clontarf.

Galwegians applied the pressure from the restart and in the 13th minute were rewarded with a try scored by Dimitru Ipati under the posts which was converted by Stephen Browne to give Galwegians a 7-3 lead. With consistent pressure and excellent carries from Fearghal Dooley, Tiernan Surlis and Andrew Paton, Wegians were under the posts again with a Stephen Browne Try and conversion.

Wegians were now 14-3 up and in control of the game. A penalty to Wegians within striking distance was no problem for Peadar O'Beirn and closed out the half with a 17-3 scoreline.

With the benefit of rolling substitutions Wegian's physicality and fitness was proving to be a problem for the visitors and a wide ball to Aongus O'Domhnaill was touched down in the corner. 22-3 with a missed conversion attempt from a difficult angle into the breeze. Wegians immediately applied the pressure from the restart and a solid sidestep and linebreak from Cian Hornibrook gave us our 4th try with an easy conversion for Peadar O'Beirn.

The visitors rallied late in the game and had to separate overlaps on the right wing with the final pass in both cases not hitting the target and the frustration was all to obvious to see.

Wegians made a final charge from deep inside their 22 and after many phases the ball reached Jordan Connaughton in the right wing for an easy touchdown to leave the final score at  Galwegians 34 and Clontarf 3.

All in all an excellent team performance with all Galwegians players having a positive impact and a work rate to be proud of resulting in such a dominating performance.

Congrats to all.
