Match Report

Galwegians got a well earned losing bonus when going down by 3 points away to UL Bohs on Saturday.

Despite scoring 2 tries to none, a penalty count of 18-2 against the Sky Blues was too much for them to overcome.

The first half was played mainly between the 22s as neither side could stamp their authority on the game.

The steady stream of penalties, that was to dog the visitors for the whole day, starting piling up against Wegians and it was the 3rd kick at goal that eventually broke the deadlock in favour of the home side. 25 mins UL Bohs 3 Wegians 0.

Wegians upped the tempo and from a line-out just inside their own half executed a superb back-line move that sent wing David Quill sliding over in the corner. Outhalf Padraigh Jennings kicked an excellent conversion from the touchline. 30 mins UL Bohs 3 Wegians 7.

The propensity of the visitors to give away penalties halted any chance they had of building momentum. The home side were testing the Wegians defense with alacrity and eventually received a penalty that got them back to within a point just before half time. 37 mins UL Bohs 6 Wegians 7.

Both teams had chances to score before the half but solid defense kept a single point between the teams. Half-team UL Bohs 6 Wegians 7.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first with Wegians continuing to give away penalties giving the home side plenty of possession and territory.

On a rare excursion into UL Bohs half, Wegians worked another excellent back-line move which was finished off by wing Paul Power in the corner. 55 mins UL Bohs 6 Wegians 12.

UL Bohs came straight back into the match with a couple of penalties. 63 mins UL Bohs 12 Wegians 12.

As the final quarter progressed UL Bohs were piling on the pressure as Wegians continued to concede penalties, but tremendous defense kept the red hordes at bay.

However, Wegians inevitably conceded a penalty opportunity which was duly converted. 75 mins UL Bohs 15 Wegians 12.

A late surge of pressure from Wegians was repelled by the home side, leaving them 3 point winners on the day.
