Match Report

Galwegians U21s got their first win of the season with a bonus point victory over Thomond at Crowley Park on Saturday last.

The Sky Blues got off to the perfect start when scrumhalf Conor O'Rourke dotted down under the posts after 5 minutes. The pack initially won a scrum against the head, the ball was moved swiftly down the blind side before the scrambling defense held strong. However the home pack rumbled the ball closer and closer to the line before O'Rourke sniped through a stretched defense. 5 mins - Wegians 5 Thomond 0

Wegians continued to dominate both territory and possession, with outhalf Padraigh Jennings making good use of the breeze at his back to ensure the game was being played in the Thomond half. Stoic defense was keeping Wegians at bay before Jennings put two scores between the teams with a penalty. 27 mins - Wegians 8 Thomond 0.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure and eventually scored a craicing try from a line out with slick hands from the backs setting fullback Ronan Burke free to slice through the befuddled Thomond rear-guard. 35 mins Wegians 15 Thomond 0.

A rare mistake from the kickoff gave Thomond their first points of the game. 36 mins - Wegians 15 Thomond 3.

The half petered out without any further scores. Half-time - Galwegians U21s 15 Thomond U21s 3.

Galwegians started the second half in much the same vein as the first as they pounded the Thomond line. The forwards inched forward from a 5 metre scrum before O'Rourke picked up from the base and sauntered over with the line. 50 mins - Wegians 20 Thomond 3.

From the kick-off Wegians backs cut loose with centres Matt Dever and Dave Symes terrorising the visitors as Wegians swept upfield in search of the bonus point try. The move was halted on the left hand side of the field, from the resulting ruck Jennings excuted an excellent cross kick, that was won superbly by wing Dave Quill, who knocked the ball back to Burke and the full back outstripped the cover defense to score in the corner. 52 mins - Wegians 25 Thomond 3.

The game then got ugly with Wegians once again threathening the Limerick men's goal line. A melee developed that took a bit of time to sort out and the result was a yellow card for Wegians with Thomond recieving a red and a yellow. Jennings slotted the penalty. 55 mins - Wegians 28 Thomond 3

The home side never recovered their composure after the lengthy stoppage and in the last 10 minutes conceded 2 late tries. Full-time Galwegians U21s 28 Thomond 15.
