Match Report

The second round of the Connacht Cup kicked off in a wet & windy Crowley Park on Sunday. As Castlebar prepare to play NUIG in the Connacht Women’s league final on Sat 23rd in Tuam, they were looking to continue their winning way in this provincial cup competition.

The game started very slow with both teams making handling mistakes with the bad conditions. Galwegians however settled after the shaky start with a try on the 10th minute from Nicole Fowley who had a great performance on the day.

Galwegians began to work some moves but Castlebar’s defence held tight and was proving hard to break. A great move on the wing let No. 14 Noreen Coyne in for the second Galwegians try. The blustery conditions led to missed conversions. The only score came for Castlebar in the form of a penalty in front of the posts which was converted by their fullback Becky Gavin.

Half time score was 10-3

The second half saw more of a display of tries from Wegians with No. 12 Emma Clery scoring 2 tries and both scores were converted by No. 13 Nicole Fowley. Fowley was rewarded for her hard work with a final try to end the game 31-3. Ciara O’Connor was very unlucky not to add to the Wegians try scorers after making a great burst through the centre. This would have topped off a great performance for O’Connor. Castlebar never threatened the Wegians line but showed great hunger & workrate throughout the game and will be fired up when we meet again in a few weeks time.

The final score was Galwegians 31 Nuig 3

The next round of the Cup sees Galwegians take on Sligo at home on Sunday 31st Jan.
