Match Report
The next round of the Connacht Cup kicked off in Castlebar on a sunny but cold Spring day. The top two teams in this competition- Galwegians & Castlebar were ready to battle it out again. Both teams have won their games over Tuam & Sligo & itβs looking likely they will meet again in the Connacht Cup Final on March 6th with both teams having one game to play.
Both teams started with fierce intensity & from the start the game reflected the great rivalry between the two sides. It was Castlebar who looked to get the first score on the sheet with a break from centre Ursula Sammon who found space through the Wegians defense. However, Sammon was stopped with a great tackle by fullback Patricia Coyne.
Wegians settled well after this and their first try came from Captain Katherine Scanlon after 10 mins. No. 10 Nicole Fowley converted the points. Wegians were over the line shortly after with a well worked move to allow winger Laura Ruddy over to score her first try for Wegians. Fowley converted again.
Galwegians made things hard for themselves at times making silly handling mistakes and losing possession going into contact. They still got points on the board with tries from centre Emma Clery and another from winger Ruddy.
Castlebar really tested the Wegians defence in the second half under the posts. Wegians however showed hard work & put in big hits to force a turnover which led to a great break through the centre by Emma Clery who gave an inside pop to Nicole Fowley to score her first try of the day. Fowley coverted once again. Castlebar kept fighting back & were rewarded with a try from their No 8 Mairead Hopkins. Injuries on the Castlebar team led the referee to end the game with at least 5mins of play left.
Final score Galwegains 33 Castlebar 3
Galwegains next game is away to Sligo on Sunday 21st & look forward to a Connacht Cup Final on March 6th.
