Match Report

This was a must win game for Galwegians and from the start, played with great fight and intensity.

The scores were slow enough to come in the first half with Highfield’s defence holding strong. Wegians Clare Raftery opened the scoreboard, opting to kick for points with a penalty awarded in front of the posts.

Outside centre Nicole Fowley scored the first two tries for Galwegians but Highfield got in for their only try of the game coming from a turnover in the scrum to keep them close at 13-5 at half time.

Galwegians started the second half raring to go leading to a cascade of tries from the backline including Sene Naoupu, Mary Healy, Noreen Coyne and Patricia Coyne with Marina Gray coming on to score her first Galwegians try. Galwegians coaches including New Zealand World Cup Winner Beth Mallard and Connacht stars George Naoupu and Bundee Aki, were very impressed with the dazzling display of attacking rugby played against Highfield with a tally of seven tries in the end.

Galwegians would like to welcome Connacht player Bundee Aki to the management team and look forward to learning from the star. The seconds team got their Connacht League campaign of to a great start with a win over Portumna with a score of 36-15.

The third round of the AIL sees Galwegians V Blackrock. This takes place Sunday 18th Oct in Blackrock. The seconds team have their next game of the Connacht League against NUIG on 18th Oct.
