Match Report
Galwegians have earned themselves a place in this year’s AIL Cup Final after a hard fought win over old rivals Blackrock in Crowley Park. Galwegians bet Castlebar comprehensively in the Connacht Cup two weeks ago and trained hard so were well prepared for this semi final. Blackrock earned their place in this semi final with a tough win over Railway Union with a scoreline of 10-5.
The Wegians coaches knew the semi final would be a step up in the level of rugby played compared to the Connacht teams played since Christmas. Blackrock had tough games against the likes of Old Belvedere and St Marys. Preparation and hard work were the key to this game.
The Galwegians girls are eager to get their hands on some silverware and repeat the success of 2 years ago when they bet Highfield in the cup final. Home advantage and a cool dry day were perfect conditions for Wegians. Galwegians got off to an intense start putting huge pressure on the Blackrock defense. They played most of the first half in the Blackrock half & got over the line on numerous times but unfortunately were held up by the Blackrock defense.
Galwegians were very unfortunate especially when Noreen Coyne was stopped from scoring on the wing with a great tackle from her opposition. Continuous pressure from Wegians eventually got Ciara O’ Connor over the line to score the only try of the game. Nicole Fowley converted to leave the score at 7-0 at half time.
The second half was as tough & evenly matched as the first and hard to watch for subs, management & supporters on the side line. Galwegians could just not get over the try line to stretch their lead. Numerous attacking moves from the backs including Irish International Mairead Coyne, could not break the Rock defence.
Blackrock continued pressure throughout the second half forced them into the Wegians half. Galwegians lost a lot of their lineouts which added extra pressure on our defense but Wegians held strong and kept them out with huge tackles from numerous players especially Edel McMahon & Denise Redmond. Wegians management made one change with Marina Gray coming on for Siobhan Daly on the wing. Final score Galwegians 7 Blackrock 0
Galwegians have got themselves into a Cup Final with a tough won over Blackrock. They will now play Cooke RFC after they bet UL Bohs on a scoreline of 21-13 in the other semi final. The AIL Cup Final will be played on the 2nd April in Old Belvedere RFC. Time to be confirmed.
