Match Report

Galwegians AIL Division 1 campaign brought to an end

Galwegians incredible tenacity in this year’s AIL Division 1 was brought to a dramatic halt last Sunday in Stradbrook. The blue belles were unable to replicate the previous week’s historic victory against Blackrock.

Blackrock started the game with immense determination and put the visitors under severe pressure. Galwegians were slow to react to the home-side’s attack and after 12 minutes Blackrock crossed over the line. This was closely followed by another unconverterd Blackrock try.

Galwegians retained little possession but managed to hold out for the remainder of the first half. However, a lapse in concentration allowed Blackrock to touch down just before the half time whistle. This converted try left Galwegians at a 17-0 disadvantage at the interval.

Galwegians returned to the pitch as the better team in the second half, dominating in all areas of the field and especially in the scrums. Their increase in physicality and self-belief was rewarded when scrum half, Mary Healy, made an excellent break under the posts on the 59th minute. Claire Raftery converted.

Galwegians continued to carry the ball ferociously, with Laura Feely and Ciara O Connor making some outstanding breaks. Although Galwegians maintained the wealth of possession in the second half, it was a case of too little too late for the visitors.

Final score Blackrock 17 – 7 Galwegians

Galwegians would like to thank all of those who travelled on the day. The support for the ladies was exceptional and is much appreciated.

The AIL play-off for 3rd and 4th will take place Saturday 13th December at home in Crowley Park. Galwegians take on UL Bohemians at 2.30pm in a bid to claim 3rd place on the AIL Division table. This would be their highest position on the table to date. All support is greatly welcome!
