Match Report
Galwegians Women's 2nd XV edged out city rivals OLBC in a cracking final of the Connacht Women's Development League in the Sportsground on Sunday. Wegians made the early running and deservedly took the lead in the first quarter with a try nuder the posts from hooker Ruby Lynch, converted by captain Annmarie Herward. However 'Club' got back into it and an unconverted try from Niamh Ryan right on half-time made it game on.
'Club' started the second-half well and some dogged Wegians defence just kept them out, before the sky blues used the wind advantage to clear their lines. Wegians struck a telling blow with a second try on 62 minutes when no. 8 Jordan Hopkins burst over from close-range for a converted try and a 14-5.
They Glenina team still had plenty more defending to do as Club laid siege to the line to try claw back the deficit. But the game was sealed on 73 minutes when Wegians centre Tanya Farrell finished brilliantly from deep to score at the posts, Herward converting again. Club did manage a late consolation try from Shannen Lane, but it was Wegians who came away with the silverware.
It was a magnificent contest between two worthy finalists, and fittingly the trophy was presented to Wegians captain Herward by Connacht Branch first woman President Ann Heneghan.
