Match Report

Our women’s seconds team travelled to Athlone for a midweek fixture on Wednesday 29th September for their first foray into the Connacht Invitational Cup 2021. Jordan Hopkins crossed the whitewash 3 minutes into the game to set the pace for what was to be an exciting encounter for the old Connacht rivals. Emma Keane converted the try for Wegians to lead 0-7.

Buccaneers replied with tries of their own in quick succession to lead 10-7, but a second try from Hopkins saw Wegians lead at half time 10-12.

Wegians took control of the game early in the second half, with an Ann Marie Heward score. The second half showed some excellent plays of rugby, but unfortunately for Buccaneers, the second half also saw two serious injuries for their players. With two and a half minutes to go Tanya Farrell scored what was to be the last try for Wegians on the night, to bring the score to 15-24. Buccaneers replied fiercely and finished the game strongly with a converted try, but it was a case of too little to late for the home side.

Final score Buccaneers 22-24 Galwegians 2XV

Many thanks to everyone at Buccaneers for a great game and a speedy recovery to the injured players. Thanks to all who travelled and  a massive well done to all our new caps.
