Match Report
Galwegians Women’s Seconds booked their place in the final with a superb 36–24 victory over Creggs in today’s semi-final, played at Dangan after the decision was made to move the fixture in order to protect the main pitch from further damage.
The Blues made a dream start, opening the scoring in just the 3rd minute when Saoirse Lawley crossed for a well-worked try. The conversion was narrowly missed, but Galwegians had an early 5–0 lead. Pressure continued to build and in the 9th minute Claudia Arranz dotted down for Galwegians’ second try, with Emma Keane adding the extras to make it 12–0.
Creggs responded quickly with a try in the 13th minute, though the conversion was missed, reducing the gap to 12–5. Galwegians struck back in spectacular fashion just before half-time when Anna Taylor produced a fantastic individual effort, breaking from inside her own half to score under the posts. Keane converted to send Galwegians into the break with a deserved 19–5 lead.
The second half saw a determined Creggs side fight their way back into the contest. Tries in the 39th minute and again in injury time, with one successful conversion, narrowed the score to 19–17 and made for a tense period in the game.
Showing great composure and resilience, Galwegians regained control in the final quarter. Claudia Arranz claimed her second try of the afternoon in the 52nd minute, followed by a fantastic score from Katherine Mahon in the 58th minute, extending the lead to 29–17.
Creggs continued to battle and added further points, but Galwegians finished strongly. A great try from Mollie Walsh late on, converted by Emma Keane, sealed the result and capped off an excellent team performance, with the full-time score finishing Galwegians Women’s Seconds 36, Creggs 24.
It was a tremendous all-round display, full of grit, skill and teamwork. Anna Taylor was a deserved Player of the Match, making it a particularly special moment given that her father, Niall Taylor, previously served as club captain.
A brilliant win for the Women’s Seconds as they march on to the final with confidence and momentum.
