Match Report
Galwegians Women's Seconds were emphatic winners of the Connacht League Plate Final after an excellent win away to Buccaneers in Moher Road on Sunday.
The Blue Belles went on the attack from the get-go, and they took the lead early doors when Casie O'Connell scored a brilliant try out on the left after great forward dominance by the Wegians pack.
Emma Keane converted for a 0-7 lead. Wegians kept up the pressure and midway through the half Max Deegan cut through the middle with another cracking score under the sticks. This time Maria Gorham converted 0-14.
Buccs laid siege to the Wegians line before half-time, but a solid blue wall held them out to keep the halftime score 14-0.
5 minutes after the restart a brilliant Jordan Hopkins break caused damage, allowing Maria Gorham to scythe through for try no. 3, which she converted herself. Minutes later a brilliant break by one of our rookies Laoise Mcdonald set up Gorham for her brace, which Emma Keane converted to put the game beyond any doubt.
This young and eager Wegians team showed a ruthless and relentless hunger as they went in search of more scores. Casie O'Connell soon grabbed her own brace with another great try out wide, before Lea Turner got in on the act with try no. 6 for an utterly dominant away side.
There was still time for Gorham to complete her hat-trick late on. However credit to Buccs who had the final say with a well-taken late consolation try from Aoibhe Kelly, leaving the final score 47-5 to the Blue Belles.
Captain Celia Killilea collected the Plate trophy from Ted Carty of the Connacht Branch, which was cue to major celebrations by the Blue Belles.
